NATIONAL ESTUARINE EUTROPHICATION ASSESSMENT UPDATE: Workshop Summary and Recommendations for Development of a Long-term Monitoring and Assessment Program Proceedings of a workshop September , Patuxent National Wildlife Research Refuge, Laurel, Maryland U.S. Department of Commerce National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. This report presents the results of a National Assessment Workshop held in August to address the problem of estuarine eutrophication. The assessment was based primarily on the results of the National Estuarine Eutrophication Survey, conducted by NOAA from to , but was supplemented by information on nutrient inputs, population projections, and land use. "The National Estuarine Eutrophication Assessment (NEEA) is a tool for evaluating both current eutrophic condition and the effectiveness of management actions aimed at reducing eutrophic condition. Eutrophication is caused by excess nutrients and is expressed by symptoms such as increased chlorophyll a and macroalgae, and decreased dissolved. IAN Press is committed to producing practical, user-centered communications that foster a better understanding of science. Our publications promote environmental problem solving through synthesis of scientific findings using effective science communication techniques.

ASSETS stands for Assessment of Estuarine Trophic Status, and builds on the U.S. National Estuarine Eutrophication Assessment (NEEA) developed by NOAA. All users have access to information about the approach used in ASSETS, and to the results obtained for the various estuaries.   Well-known examples are the United States National Estuarine Eutrophication Assessment (NEEA) (Bricker et al., ) and the OSPAR Comprehensive procedure (OSPAR, ). The NEEA approach uses a combination of primary and secondary symptoms to derive an Overall Eutrophic Condition (OEC) index, which is then associated with a measure of Overall. Proceedings of a workshop September 4–5 , Patuxent Wildlife Research Refuge, Laurel, Maryland.

The National Estuarine Eutrophication Assessment, a survey of the extent, severity, types, and probable causes of eutrophic symptoms, was conducted in the early s (Bricker et al., ). The results showed that the majority of systems included in the study (84 of ) exhibited ‘moderate’ to ‘high’ levels of eutrophic symptoms that.
